Hot Spots
  • Carara National Park - close to San Jose and extremely birdy!
  • Golfito National Wildlife Refuge
  • Los Cusingos Bird Sanctuary - be sure to ask for a park ranger as a bird guide. this place has one of the best feeders.
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve - not sure if it's worth the hype but still is a good place to see many fascinating birds.
  • Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve - there may be many birds but they are pretty hard to see.
Eco Lodges
  • La Selva Biological Station - unbelievably birdy!
  • El Copal Reserve - lovely family owned reserve/lodge, amazing meals!
  • Esquinas Rainforest Lodge - a bit pricy but nice birdy ground.
  • Hacienda Baru - offers various adventure packages in addition to good birding and budget stay.
  • Heliconias Rainforest Lodge - known for the hair-raising hanging bridge, also an excellent place to see Tody Motmot among others
  • La Ensenada Lodge - inviting low-cost eco lodge with vast grounds to relax and explorer the birds!
  • Las Cruces Biological Station - not as birdy as La Selva but still is a fine place to bird.
  • Paraiso Quetzal Lodge - be sure to try their Quetzal tour
  • Savegre Mountain Lodge - well-known eco lodge and it won't disappoint. it provides excellent birding and comfortable stay.
  • Talari Mountain Lodge - lovely family run lodge with lots of birding opportunities and amazing meals

  • Arenal Observatory Lodge - nice sizable ground with lots of birds
  • Hotel Bougainvillea - close to the airport, beautiful garden
